Sweet Spot Strategy – Whiteboard Animations – Great Method to Explain Concepts

I’m a huge fan of whiteboards and an even bigger fan of using whiteboards to make concepts accessible and clear. I saw today on both Robert Scoble’s and Brad Feld’s blogs a video explaining incentives using whiteboard animations. RSA Animate is a series of videos that you can find on YouTube that take various subjects and show a video of someone drawing out the concepts on a whiteboard while the author narrates. In the video below, you’ll hear Dan Pink, author of Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, talk about why money isn’t a great motivator for cognitive tasks. While you hear him explain the science and studies behind the argument for 11.5 minutes, an artist is whiteboarding everything he says in a clear manner. He even mentions how valuable Hackathons are. If you liked that video, then there are several more found on YouTube by searching for RSA Animate, including ones covering Freakanomics, The Secret Powers of Time, and Left Brain, Right Brain. There is also another company, Common Craft, that does something similar. They have a line of videos “In Plain English”. For example, below is one of “Blogs in Plain English”:

One of the skills I wish I had was the ability to create whiteboard videos like the examples above. Being able to explain complex problems, solutions and ideas visually is a powerful ability. One of my goals in the near future is to improve in this area, hopefully getting to a level where I am half as good at explaining concepts as RSA and Common Craft.

Money Sweet Spot – Answers.com Shareholders Are Furious Over Sale, Promise To Block It (ANSW)

Shareholders claiming to control as much as 40% of Answers.com are spitting nails over management’s agreement to sell the company to AFCV Holdings for $127 million.

They say that price deeply undervalues a company that is a top 20 Internet presence with around 100 million global uniques, according to ComScore. It used to be that acquirers would pay close to $20 per unique. Answers.com management is getting $1.20.

A source close to Outboard investments, which owns 9.2% of the company, told us, “There’s not a shot in the world this thing is going through. This is going up for auction or it’s not going down.”

Says a principle: “We got this news this morning with our cornflakes – on Yahoo. The company gave no indication that it was anywhere near making a deal with anybody or that it was even shopping it around.”

“We’re not agreeing to anything at this stage. We’re waiting for the fourth quarter outcome. All we’ve seen is less than bare bones. Our expectation is that on reflection, the board will reconsider and look for significantly higher price.”

Another principle tells us the company mislead shareholders during its Q3 earnings call, when it promised a materially better 2011 and said it would hire a PR firm. He argues that management has done a poor job presenting the company in a reasonable light relative to other public companies. “It’s done a poor job communicating its successes,” says this source.

These shareholders say Answers.com’s valuation should be closer to Demand Media’s ~30X of revenues, rather than the ~10X AFCV Holdings is planning to pay.

These shareholders say Answers.com is selling with ~$30 million in cash it could have used to acquire companies or build a salesforce. They say that Answers.com recently hired former Associated Content CEO Patrick Keane to develop such a salesforce and that Keane was showing early traction and should have been given more time to prove his plan out.

A source close to Answers.com says it’s probably true that the company being “incredibly undervalued” in this deal. This source says reasons management decided to sell for such a low price anyway are:

Answers.com has a distributed, disorganized workforce: 80% of its people work out of Jerusalem.
Answers.com revenues, which are 90% dependent on Google ads, took a sizeable hit when Google recently adjusted its search algorithm to fight search spam.
Management thought about hiring former Associated Content CEO Patrick Keane to full time to run the company, but Keane wouldn’t do it for less than a 6% stake.

The sweet spot of the IT consulting business requires more skills than needed for micro business IT consulting. Sweet spot companies have anywhere from 10-50 computers. This level of business is where you should be focusing most of your IT consulting efforts.

These sweet spot businesses generally use Microsoft Windows based systems. They have anywhere from 10-100 employees. In terms of annual revenue, in U.S. Dollars, usually equates to annual earnings of 1 million up to 10 million. The big thing that puts them into the sweet spot is that they have graduated from peer to peer and they need one or two real dedicated servers.

Hardware Skills You Need for the Sweet Spot

You need to know all the IT consulting skills a micro small business would hire you for plus about 8 or 10 other things. You should be familiar with server hardware, such as working with multi processor servers, should be familiar with how RAID works, Zero One Five, you should be familiar with how multiport communications applications adapters work for setting up remote access servers and serial port sharing.

You should have familiarity with attached storage systems, network attached storage, more sophisticated back up solutions like digital audio tape digital linear tape, and the hybrids, etc.

Other Skills for Sweet Spot IT Consulting

You should be really comfortable with sophisticated battery back up solutions, routers, the CSU/DSUs to connect you up to the telecommunications lines. And you should start to get some familiarity with some of the more advanced Y-5 hardware, the stuff that is not quite commodity level, where you start being able to get into Roam successfully between your access points and being able to do some management and SMP tasks.

In terms of networking software, you need to know all the basic desktop software and have the ability to do all the networking skills that are required for micro small business. For the sweet spot, you should also be comfortable with some of the popular server operating systems out there.

These include Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Small Business Server, Novell NetWare, Novell Small Business Suite, and Linux which is starting to pick up some traction among small businesses.
